The Gel Cell battery is similar to the AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery in that its contents are sealed, but different because technically the AGM battery is still considered to be a wet cell. The guts of a Gel Cell contain a silica additive that causes it to set up or stiffen, first like Jell-O, then after subsequent discharge/charge cycles more like peanut brittle. Micro-cracks form in this gelled electrolyte that provide paths for the oxygen recombination reactions between the positive and negative plates. The recharge voltages on this type of cell are lower than the other styles of lead acid battery making it probably the most sensitive cell in terms of adverse reactions to over-voltage charging, and thus needing special care. This is my second battery tender. I have the first one for the past three years and it's still working very well. I'm using these products on my cars and motorcycles. This product will help from having to replace a batterry before it times.

This battery tender is a great tool to keep all your batteries at peak opeating levels. I have several items that I have installed the leads to and can switch the tender to any of those items. I decided to get another tender for more items in my shop. It is great for maintenance and assures me I will get a good chance to start whatever is attached.

I've always been more than a little scared of hooking things up to car batteries. After using these Battery Tender products, I'm 100% confident that they're safe. I bolted on quick-disconnect harnesses to two SeaDoos. Kept them topped off while stored in the garage.
Unfortunately, a temporary move to another location left the batteries without the chargers for many months...batteries died & partially dried out, and I was too stupid to check them. After hooking up the chargers, they each died with a sizzling sound and a puff of grey smoke. Tech support would not respond to multiple contacts. This mis-use was not covered under warranty (understandably). But, there is/was no safety to prevent the meltdown. If I hadn't have been standing there to pull the plug, I don't know if it would have caused a fire. But...tech support would not confirm. So BE CAUTIOUS: always wait & monitor for a few minutes after plugging in the charger. If there is a meltdown, you need to be there to pull the plug. Definitely wear gloves, as the metal gets hot enough to melt the paint.
For the replacement batteries, I got sealed gel cells. Nothing to fill up, and they were a bit smaller than the OEM lead acid batteries...good since there isn't much space down there. After spending a good 1/2 hour scouring the internet and the mfr's web site, it still was unclear which model was right for the gel cells. I chatted with two different reps and called a local store to make sure that this model was correct for gel cells.
Plugged it in and had zero problems. The wiring harnesses are all the same, and everything was automatic. Couldn't ask for anything better for a dim-wit like me.
